Call for Participation : Exploratorium

This is a project I am working on at the EXPLORATORIUM in San Francisco. I am on the hunt for participants! If you find this interesting, it would be lovely if you could re-blog this call for participation! If you do not live in the Bay Area, and want to participate, do not worry! Contact me and we will work something out.

RESTRAINT:

Do you ever feel restrained?

Restraint can come in many different forms: from medications you are taking, personal relationships, politics, jobs, treatments for mental illnesses, finances, etc.

The West Gallery of the Exploratorium is looking for YOUR personal story about what restrains you.

We are in search of personal stories to share with visitors to help them relate to a historic exhibit. This exhibit incorporates a 19th century restraining device known as the Utica Crib. This device was named after the New York State Lunatic Asylum at Utica where it was heavily used to confine patients. The crib design incorporates slats that gave it an appearance similar to a child’s crib. A patient who slept in the Utica crib for several days commented that he had rested better and found it useful for “all crazy fellows as I, whose spirit is willing, but whose flesh is weak.” (Journal of Insanity, October 1864.)

With the Utica Crib in mind, the West Gallery is turning to the public for personal stories regarding the theme of restraint.

We are looking to make short (1 minute ) audio recordings of your stories. These audio recordings will then be edited for visitors to listen to while they lay in the exhibit’s replica of a Utica Crib. It is important to know that we will keep participant’s names anonymous in the the recording.

This call is open to the public, so feel free to pass this notice around!

The deadline is December 4th.

Please contact our exhibit support to set up a time to record your story.
